The comparisons between Little Hurricane and the White Stripes have been generously scattered throughout their ample California press (my opinion: an easy paragraph filler for local music writers). As a dedicated fan of both bands, I completely disagree. Besides the concept of a female drummer, and the fact that the bluesy band has two members-the similarities end.
Simply speaking, uber-gorgeous CC is a hundred times better at drumming. To elaborate, she created all their rythms, wrote half the songs, and deals with all of the booking and PR for the band. The style is completely different, the lyrics are more carefully laid out. Tone is a trained singer and musician who can't stand a flat note or a misplaced chord. After years in the music industry, he appreciates a clean sound as much as a grimey shot-glass-slide-guitar. If anything, Little Hurricane reminds me of the Black Keys, with a tiny sprinkle of Dresden Dolls-but album reviews are no time to make cheap comparisons.
Homewrecker is a gutsy homage to love, personal struggles and victories. After only two weeks, it is already in the top 100 picks for Blues Albums on itunes! From beginning to end, the ballads and jams are lined up like part of a perfect story. After at least a dozen shows, I still choke on tears during Sweet Pea. There is no way I can stand still during Trouble Ahead. Or Lies. Or Give Em Hell.... or Homewrecker. The point is, join us this Saturday, April 2 at the Casbah for Little Hurricane's official album release party. I dare you not to absolutely adore them, and the opening bands are pretty awesome picks!
Above: Little Hurricane plays a crazy packed show at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Ecstatic fans hung from balconies and rafters to get a good view. The fellow in the yellow shirt was definitely Bollywood dancing. Below: Empowered female musicians.
